SUPERIOR, Wis. – Sophomore goaltender
Molly Black (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake) made 22 saves for her second career shutout as the UW-Superior women's hockey team blanked Northland, 2-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Wessman Arena on Friday.
The Yellowjackets got goals from sophomore
Gaby Andreacchi (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Patrick) in the first period and freshman
Anna Scherling (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) in the third to improve to 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the WIAC on the season. With the win, UWS remains undefeated in 17 all-time games against the LumberJills, dating to the first meeting of the teams in 2016.
Black, who moved to 2-0-0 on the year with the victory, stopped 10 shots in the second period, including making a sparkling pad save on Northland's Kyleigh Moffatt with 4:15 remaining in the second period to preserve a 1-0 lead.
Andreacchi gave her team that lead just 4:24 into the contest as she directed a long centering pass along the far boards past Northland goalie Sky Hughes at the near post for her first goal of the season. Junior defender
Jada LeBlanc (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute) started the play to earn the secondary assist.
Scherling doubled the lead at 1:15 of the third period. On the play, Hughes stoned Parnell twice in quick succession before the rebound squirted to Scherling at the side of the net. Scherling popped it home for her first collegiate goal, which was also assisted by freshman
Cailey Davidson (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo).
Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) led UWS with five shots on goal while Andreacchi and
Jordann Swingle (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) fired four apiece. Hughes (0-4-1) turned aside 35 Superior shots in total, keeping the pesky LumberJills in the game.
Each team finished 0-for-4 on the power play.
Northland dropped to 0-5-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the WIAC with the loss.
UWS is back in action Saturday at 2 p.m., hosting UW-Stevens Point.
