UW-Stout Too Much for Yellowjackets in Road Loss

MENOMONIE, Wis. -- UW-Stout outscored the UW-Superior women's basketball team, 23-6, in the second quarter and went on for a 73-44 non-conference victory at Johnson Fieldhouse on Tuesday.

The Blue Devils (3-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Reagan Sorensen with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting in 22 minutes off the bench. Amanda Giesen added 16 points and 10 rebounds and Anna Mutch chipped in 14 points and four boards as Stout thwarted an early test from Superior.

The Yellowjackets, who dipped to 2-2 with the loss, scored the game's first bucket, a 3-pointer from senior Kaelyn Christian (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville Senior), and later held an 8-7 lead on a sophomore Chloe Peterson (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) free throw with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first quarter. Stout, however, closed the period with an 8-2 spurt and expanded its advantage to 33-15 with Giesen free throws five minutes before halftime. The Blue Devils led, 40-17, at the break and didn't look back, pushing its edge to 62-32 after three quarters.

Christian paced UWS with nine points while classmate Mady Sanders (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) had seven and five rebounds.

Stout shot 46 percent from the field and limited Superior to just 30. The Blue Devils had a 42-24 rebounding edge and scored 38 points in the paint.

In all, eight Yellowjackets scored, with sophomore Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) tallying a career-high-tying seven points. Peterson and junior Bryton Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) each finished with five points.

UWS is back in action Friday at the UWL Thanksgiving Classic against UW-La Crosse. Game time is set for 3 p.m., at Mitchell Hall.
