SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Sophomore
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) and junior
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) each scored hat tricks as the UW-Superior women's soccer team captured its second consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference championship over Northwestern, 6-0, at NBC Spartan Sports Complex on Saturday.
With the win, the Yellowjackets' fourth in a row against the Eagles, UWS earns the UMAC automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III women's soccer championship, and will find out their first-round opponent in the NCAA.com selection show Monday at 1 p.m., CT.
Leading, 2-0, on a pair of Holmquist goals, Superior (15-3-4) scored three times in the first 11 minutes after halftime to leave no doubt. Holmquist secured her third career hat trick in the 56th minute, heading home a driven corner kick to the back post from junior
Lindrey Schendel (Firestone, Colo./Skyline) for a 5-0 lead.
Wilson scored just 1:41 into the second half, pushing the lead to 3-0 as Holmquist received a long throw in, spun on the corner of the 18-yard box and found Wilson for the goal. Then, in the 49th minute, junior
Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake) led Wilson perfectly in stride, who made no mistake with the finish for a 4-0 advantage. Wilson completed her fourth career hat trick in the 87th with assists from Holmquist (her eighth point of the day) and junior
Kaitlyn Raisch (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins).
Holmquist opened the scoring in the 12th minute, picking out the top-right corner over the outstretched arms of Northwestern goalkeeper Reagan Flaschberger (five saves). She added her second unassisted marker of the match in the 21st minute, as Flaschberger couldn't corral a cross off of a short corner.
Holmquist and Wilson lead UWS with 20 and 13 goals on the season, respectively.
Sophomore
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) grabbed her seventh clean sheet of the season, making eight saves, including five in the second half, to improve to 12-2-2 overall. Flaschberger fell to 8-8-2 on the year.
Wilson was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament with four goals and three assists for 11 points.
The Eagles' season comes to a close at 11-9-2 overall.
