SUPERIOR, Wis. – UW-River Falls outscored the UW-Superior women's basketball team 35-23 after halftime to take a 63-47 decision in the final game of the Superior Shootout Holiday Classic at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Falcons shot nearly 53 percent in the second half on 10-of-19 shooting, improving to 11-2 on the season. UWS, which led, 14-12, after the first quarter, got 14 points from senior
Kaelyn Christian (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville Senior) and 10 more from sophomore
Chloe Peterson (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) in 15 minutes off the bench.
UWRF limited the Yellowjackets (4-6) to 30 percent from the field and 54 from the foul line in the win.
Senior
Mady Sanders (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds to help Superior tie the rebounding battle with the Falcons at 33 apiece.
The first quarter featured four lead changes and two tie scores before UWS, down 12-8 with just over a minute remaining in the period, got consecutive 3-pointers by sophomore
Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls), assisted by junior
Sam Parendo (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) and Christian, respectively, to take the lead into the second stanza.
Christian splashed a triple a minute into the second for a 17-14 advantage, but the Falcons rallied for a 28-24 edge at the break. UWRF used a 10-0 run in a 1:52 span to take control of the game midway through the third quarter at 42-28, capping the spurt with a Zoey Buchan jumper. The 'Jackets were unable to work the deficit under double figures the rest of the way.
Macy Nilsen scored 14 points, Buchan 13 and Julia Seidel had 11 to pace the Falcons' offense. Buchan also grabbed a game-high nine boards.
Junior
Bryton Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) finished with seven points and three rebounds, while Dobson had six points and four boards for UWS.
The Yellowjackets return to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action Saturday host Northland at 4:45 p.m.
