AUSTIN, Texas – UW-Superior junior defender
Alex Hanson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) was named to the 2022 Division III CSC Academic All-America® men's soccer third team selected by College Sports Communicators and announced Wednesday.
Hanson becomes the Yellowjackets' eighth overall selection, joining women's soccer's Niya Wilson (third team in 2022 and first team in 2021), women's basketball's Eva Reinertsen (first team in 2020 and second team in 2019) and Sally Linzmeier (second team in 2015), men's soccer's Eric Watson (second in 2019) and baseball's Braeden Barr (third team in 2019).
The College Sports Communicators (formerly known as College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-America® program recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom, separately recognizing women's soccer student-athletes in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
The four Academic All-America® teams, totaling 124 players, have a 3.88 average grade-point average with 36 members posting a perfect 4.0 GPA.
To be eligible for nomination consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or higher and be a starter or key contributor on their respective team.
Hanson, a double major in Pre-Medicine and Biology with a 3.97 GPA, earned first-team All-UMAC and United Soccer Coaches all-region third-team honors this season for the first time. He started all 22 matches on a backline that had 11 clean sheets on the year and surrendered just 17 total goals and 8.2 shots in 22 matches for an 0.91 average. He scored the first goal in a 2-0 victory over Crown to close the regular season on Oct. 29.
Hanson was also named UMAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 24.
The Yellowjackets won their sixth consecutive UMAC tournament in 2022 and advanced to their fifth straight NCAA tournament, finishing with a 16-4-2 record.
