NORTHFIELD, Minn. --Â St. Olaf scored three unanswered goals -- including twice on the power play -- to take the front end of a home-and-home weekend series from the UW-Superior women's hockey team, 3-1, at the St. Olaf Ice Arena on Friday.

UWS scored first just 4:13 into the game, despite the Oles controlling early play. On the goal, junior
Kailey Swerhun (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius) charged over the line on the left wing and found freshman
Anna Scherling (Rogers, Minn./Rogers), who slipped a backhander under the pads of St. Olaf goaltender Carley Tuman for a 1-0 lead and her second goal of the season.

St. Olaf (6-5-1) tied the game at 15:36 of the first period as Solvei Berg-Messerole, who figured into all three goals for the host, scored from Iona Welsh and Lexie Ligday.

Ligday gave the Oles the lead at the 8:30 of the second on the power play as her point shot found its way past sophomore goalie
Molly Black (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake). Annika Patterson and Berg-Messerole assisted on the goal.

Berg-Messerole put the game away at 17:25 of he third with another power-play marker, this ime assisted by Hannah Metric and Patterson.

The Oles went 2-for-6 on the power play for the day, while UWS did not convert scoreless in its only opportunity.Â

Black was solid the net for the Yellowjackets, turning away 38-of-30 shots in falling to 2-2-0 on the year. Tuman made 15 saves to earn the victory in the St. Olaf net, improving to 1-2-0.

The loss is the first the Oles in the last six games in the all-time series between the teams. Superior now leads, 7-2-2 since the first meeting in 2003.

UWS (4-6-0) and St. Olaf close the weekend with a 3 p.m., puck drop at Wessman Arena on Saturday.
