RIVER FALLS, Wis. – Senior defender
Jenna Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) scored a second-period power-play goal, but fourth-ranked UW-River Falls completed a weekend sweep of the UW-Superior women's hockey team with a 5-1 WIAC victory at Hunt Arena on Saturday.
Byfuglien's goal at 6:20 of the middle frame cut the Falcons' lead in half at 2-1 before they rattled off two even-strength tallies in the second period and one more in the third for good measure.
The UWS goal – the third of the season for Byfuglien – was assisted by
Emma Booth (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) and
Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster).
Emma Schmitz made it 3-1 UWRF 1:44 after the Byfuglien goal and Kora Torkelson added the fourth at 17:47. Torkelson finished off a hat trick at 7:38 of the third period with assists from Alex Hantge and Callie Hoff.
Senior goaltender
McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) made a career-high 44 saves – including 16 in the third period – in the loss. Sami Miller stopped 11 shots for the win in net for River Falls.
Hoff (three assists) was one of four Falcons with multiple points for the game, joining Torkelson, Allison Niebur (two assists) and Erin Olson (two assists).
River Falls (20-1-0, 6-1-0 WIAC) went 2-for-5 on the power play while UWS was 1-for-2.
UWS (6-8-1, 1-3-1 WIAC) is back in action Monday at Hamline. Puck drop at TRIA Rink is 3:30 p.m.
