DAVENPORT, Fla. --Â Freshman right-hander
Riley Harbaugh (Banks, Ore./Banks) struck out a season-high nine batters in 6 2/3 innings, but Knox scratched across a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and held on for a 3-2 victory over the UW-Superior baseball team at Northeast Regional Park on Sunday.
Â
The Yellowjackets close their spring trip for the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at 3-6, returning home 3-10 overall.
Â
After surrendering a two-run home run to left field into the wind off the bat of Kendall Ballman in the second inning, Harbaugh settled in. He retired nine consecutive Prairie Fire hitters between the fourth and seventh innings and got nine groundball outs on his 99-pitch day.
Â
UWS knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth.
Christian Garcia (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) started things with a leadoff double to the gap in right-center field and
Jordan Trimble (Victorville, Calif./Grandview (Colo.)) followed with a one-out double down the line in right to cut the lead in half.
Â
After a strikeout, Trimble stole third and scampered home when the throw from Etienne Thomas behind the plate ended up in left field.
Â
Superior had a chance to take the lead in the top of the seventh as
Sam McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) took a 1-0 pitch from Knox starter Matthew Shover to right field for a leadoff single. Next up, pinch hitter
Nick Fredrikson (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) smashed one to third and McNosky was doubled off. Shover fanned
Jonny Rhodes (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) on three pitches to end the inning.
Â
Harbaugh struck out both Ballman and E.J. Roncone to begin the seventh prior to running into trouble. He issued a walk to Thomas and pinch hitter Flynn Hersh and shortstop Evan Laws came up with consecutive singles for the lead.Â
Â
Jack Rheineck (St. Louis Park, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) came on in relief of Harbaugh, ending the frame with a strikeout of Jason Clark. Rheineck was perfect in his 1 1/3 innings with two Ks.
Â
Mike Rodriguez (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) reached on a throwing error to start the eighth, moved to second on a successful sacrifice bunt by
Ben Rhodes (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and, with two out, stole third. Shover got Garcia swinging, though, to end the threat.
Â
UWS went down in order in the ninth as Shover earned the complete-game win, improving to 1-1. He scattered five hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out 10 in 120 pitches.
Â
