MINNEAPOLIS --Â The UW-Superior baseball team exploded for eight runs over the second and third innings in the second game of its doubleheader with Augsburg and sophomore right-hander
Matt Tappe (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony Village) did the rest to salvage a split with an 8-3 win at U.S. Bank Stadium on Friday.
Â
The Yellowjackets (4-11) scored four runs each in the their second and third turns at bat in the second game and Tappe (3-1) threw his first collegiate complete game, allowing six hits and three earned runs over seven innings. Tappe fanned four without permitting a walk while throwing 99 pitches on the day.
Â
UWS dropped the opener, 5-1, to the Auggies, who are now 8-7 overall this season.
Â
Superior banged out eight hits in game two with sophomore Isaaac Fugere and junior
Sam McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) collecting two apiece. Fugere was 2-for-4 with a two-run double, stolen base and run scored. McNosky went 2-for-3 with two runs scored out of the No. 8 spot in the order.
Â
Nick Fredrikson (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) and McNosky began the second inning with singles to center field off of Augsburg starter Jake Skogrand. With two out,
Jonny Rhodes (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) singled to left field, scoring Fredrikson for the lead. Fugere followed his double to center, plating McNosky and Rhodes, making it 3-0.
Nick Shea (Pengilly, Minn./Greenway) then took an 0-2 offering to the gap in left center for another run-scoring double.
Â
Skogrand hit
Noah Paulseth (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) with a pitch to open the bottom of the third and was relieved by Myer Schmitz, who issued walks to Fredrickson and
Jordan Trimble (Victorville, Calif./Grandview (Colo.)) sandwiched by a McNosky base hit. Trimble's walk with the bases loaded extended the lead to 5-0. Schmitz then plunked
Ben Rhodes (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), forcing home Fredrikson.Â
Â
With Schmitz unable to record an out, Augsburg turned to Dylan Irving, who promptly hit
Jonny Rhodes (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) with the bases still loaded for a 7-0 advantage. Irving got the next two batters to strike out swinging, but balked home Trimble for the eighth run.
Â
Tappe was in control from there, surrendering just a Michael Weiss RBI groundout in the fourth and a two-run double to Brandon Lockhart in the seventh.
Â
Skogrand (1-2) absorbed the loss on the mound for Augsburg, lasting two innings and scattering seven hits, five runs and a walk. Irving threw the final four frames with five strikeouts in relief of Schmitz.Â
Â
The first game was scoreless into the bottom of the fourth inning when Augsburg received consecutive RBI doubles from Weiss and Jack Baumgart to take a 2-0 lead. The Auggies added three more runs in the fifth on RBI hits by Skogrand (double to left field), Connor Stoik (triple to right) and Weiss (single up the middle) off of left-hander
Ryan Rodriguez (Chaska, Minn./Chaska).
Â
The 'Jackets tried to mount a rally in the top of the sixth, using three straight hits with one out to get on the board. Fugere doubled to left,
Ryan Castaneda (San Pedro, Calif./Junipero Serra) singled through the right side and
Christian Garcia (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) did the same to plate Fugere and force Austin Jerylo's mound exit.Â
Â
Matthew Moe steered the Auggies clear of further trouble in the inning with the help of a 6-4-3 double play and tossed a perfect seventh to nail down the win.Â
Â
Rodriguez (1-2) took the loss for UWS, allowing seven hits and five earned runs with five strikeouts and two walks in 95 pitches for his second complete game of the year.
Â
Jerylo (4-0) went 5 1/3 innings, giving up six hits and a run with four strikeouts for the victory.
Â
Fugere batted 3-for-3 with a double and run for half of Superior's six hits in the first game. Castaneda, Garcia and Trimble (a fifth-inning infield single) had the others.
