ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Freshman
Jordan Trimble (Victorville, Calif./Grandview (Colo.)) ripped a two-run single to left field with two out in the top of the ninth inning, capping a four-run comeback for a 6-4 victory over Northwestern in game two of an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at Reynolds Field.
Trimble hit a bases-clearing double down the right-field line in the seventh, scoring the tying run later in the inning as the Yellowjackets snapped a five-game skid against Northwestern with the win.
UWS (4-13, 1-2 UMAC) dropped 3-0 decision in the first game of the day despite sophomore right-hander
Matt Tappe's (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony Village) second consecutive complete game.
Trimble finished 3-for-4 with a double and run scored from the No. 8 spot in the order in the nightcap, keying a rally that saw Superior score six times in the final three innings.
The Eagles (8-5, 3-1) opened a 4-0 lead through five innings before the comeback began. UWS loaded the bases in the top of the seventh on singles and hit by pitch with two out. Trimble then took a 1-1 pitch from UNW's Bryce Crabb down the line in right, scoring pinch runner
Cole Ondrus (Esko, Minn./Esko), catcher
Isaac Fugere (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) and right fielder
Payton Steiner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo).
Sam McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) followed with a grounder to shortstop. Mason Skrede couldn't corral Sam Peterson's high throw cleanly, allowing Trimble -- who was going on contact -- to chug home from second to tie the game.
Ondrus and
Christian Garcia (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) opened the ninth with consecutive singles off of Crabb, and Steiner moved both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt prior to Trimble's go-ahead knock.
Freshman righty
Jack Rheineck (St. Louis Park, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) hit Crabb to lead off the bottom of the ninth, but Crabb was erased on a bouncer to first by Keegan Vercoe. After Vercoe advanced to second on a wild pitch and Peterson was hit by another, Cramer Hamilton singled up the middle to load the bases. Rheineck, though, buckled down, striking out Skrede swinging on three pitches and induced a ground out to second to secure the win.
Rheineck (1-1) earned his first collegiate victory, tossing the 3 2/3 innings in relief of classmate
Riley Harbaugh (Banks, Ore./Banks). Rheineck allowed just two hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 57 pitches. Harbaugh worked 5 1/3 innings, scattering seven hits and two earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts.
Crabb (3-1) went the distance for Northwestern, giving up nine hits, five earned runs and a walk while fanning four in 109 pitches.
Fugere was the only other Superior player with multiple hits in game two, going 2-for-4 with a run.
Tappe (3-2) kept the 'Jackets in the opener all day, yielding just eight hits, two walks and three runs in an economical 97 pitches. Vercoe, though, hit his third home run in two days -- a solo shot to right-center field in the first -- to stake Northwestern to an early lead.
Guerin Szafraniec added an RBI single in the second and Peterson another solo homer to left in the eighth to account for the final.
Superior received a pair of hits from
Bryce Flanagan (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd Senior) in a 2-for-4 outing as well as singles by Fugere, Steiner and
Ben Rhodes (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) off of Owen Boerema (2-1), who fanned 12 in a complete-game effort.
Next up, the Yellowjackets host Northland in the their home opener Tuesday at NBC Spartan Sports Complex. First pitch is slated for noon.
