MINNEAPOLIS -- The UW-Superior women's tennis team dropped the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference championship match, 5-0, to Northwestern on Saturday at Baseline Tennis Center.
The Yellowjackets were making their first appearance in the league championship match as the No. 2 seed and close the season with an 8-15 overall record.
Northwestern won all three doubles matches, as Annie Orvis and Belinda Weddle beat
Chiyono Owa (Tokyo, Japan/Otsuma Nakano Senior), 8-6, at No. 1, Taylar Smith and Elli Dodge beat
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) and
Lainey Zurn (Almena, Wis./Barron), 8-5, at No. 2 and Elise Jarchow and Analise Marquardt topped
Kaytlyn Syverson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) and
Shelby Hanson (Albert Lea, Minn./Albert Lea Senior), 8-4, at No. 3.
Dodge beat Owa, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 singles and Jarchow defeated Hanson at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0, to give the Eagles the title.
Northwestern improves to 21-3 overall and earns the UMAC's automatic qualification into the NCAA tournament.
