SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Sophomore forward
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) scored in the 14th minute to knot the match at 1-1, but Augsburg's Samantha Meyer notched the game winner in the 69th as the Auggies defeated the UW-Superior women's soccer team, 2-1, at NBC Spartan Sports Complex in the season opener for both on Thursday.
Holmquist's marker, which came just 18 seconds after Augsburg opened the scoring through Jayla Ponce with 13:21 gone, brought the Yellowjackets level and the teams played even until the Meyer tally.
The goal by Ponce came off of her left foot and over the outstretched arm of goalkeeper
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) into the upper 90 on the far side. Holmquist then took a feed from sophomore classmate
Ava Giswold (Duluth, Minn./Proctor), beating goalie Iz Shuster low.
The Yellowjackets seemed poised to earn their first result all-time against the Auggies in their eighth meeting prior to the game-winning goal at the 68:55 mark. on that goal, Meyer executed a give-and-go with Sam Donahugh before depositing a shot in to the right side of the net from the center of the 18-yard box.
The Auggies outshot UWS, 22-4, on the day, including 13-2 in the first half, forcing Lang to make nine saves over the course of the match.
Shuster picked up the win in goal, making one save on a 17th-minute shot from junior
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior). UWS posted four shots on the day, with two coming from Wilson. Holmquist and
Tori Vosburg (Cloquet, Minn./Esko) in the 78th minute had the others
UWS (0-1-0) will get another chance at a MIAC foe on Sunday when Hamline comes to town for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
