Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. -- The UW-Superior volleyball team dropped its final two matches in the 2022 Subway Stinger Classic on Saturday against Macalester, 3-2, and St. Scholastica, 3-0.

The Yellowjackets (2-6) took the first set against the Scots, 25-17, before falling in the second and third sets, 25-20 and 25-23. UWS rebounded in the fourth for a 25-21 win, but were outlasted in the deciding fifth set, 15-7.

The Saints topped Superior, 25-20, 29-27 and 25-22 in the nightcap to go 3-0 overall in the tournament.

Senior Cassy Teff (Foley, Minn./Foley) was named to the all-tournament team for UWS. She posted 13 kills, 17 assists and 20 digs versus Macalester and added 11 kills, 17 assists and 12 digs against CSS.

The Scots (5-3) jumped out to an 8-2 advantage in the fifth set and never looked back despite the 'Jackets pulling to within 8-5 on a Macalester error and kills from freshman Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool) and Teff. From there, the Scots closed the match with a 7-2 run, which featured four consecutive kills.

Macalester outhit UWS, .164-.144 with 57 kills, but the 'Jackets had a solid match at the service line, recording nine aces.

The Yellowjackets led the Saints in kills, 42-39, and assists, 40-37, but St. Scholastica (5-1) used a balanced attack of Jessica Remer and Lindsey Baribeau with 11 kills apiece to propel the victory.

The Saints used extra points to take the second set, erasing a 16-11 UWS lead to put a stranglehold on the match and took a three-point win in the third to seal the deal.

The Yellowjackets are back home Wednesday at 7 p.m., to host Hamline.
