SUPERIOR, Wis. -- The UW-Superior women's soccer team broke out of an early-season offensive slumber in a big way Wednesday in its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opener against Northland at NBC Spartan Sports Complex Wednesday.
The Yellowjackets scored four times in the second half and got a hat trick from junior forward
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), ending what was a 383-minute scoreless streak, dating to the season opener against Augsburg on Sept. 1.
It took UWS (1-2-2, 1-0-0 UMAC) 37 minutes to find the back of the net when Wilson finished off a play with assists from freshman
Abby Randall (North Branch, Minn./North Branch Area) and junior
Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake) (one goal, two assists) for her first of the season, but floodgates soon opened.
Wilson converted a 56th-minute penalty to double the lead, and freshman substitute
Kamryn Hill (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) picked up her first collegiate goal in the 75th. Alessi and sophomore
Emma Fornengo (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) assisted on the goal.
Alessi made it 4-0 in the 82nd minute with an assist from Wilson, who completed the hat trick in the 85th from Hill.
Goalkeepers
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and
Quinn Clark (Duluth Minn./Duluth East) each played a half and made one save apiece to keep the clean sheet. Lang improved to 1-2-1 with the win. Elysabeth Lough (1-4-0) stopped 14 shots in the Northland net in the loss.
UWS outshot the LumberJills, 37-3, for the match, had 11 corner kicks and held 64 percent of possession.
The Yellowjackets next head to UW-River Falls for a 2 p.m., kickoff at Ramer Soccer Stadium looking for its second consecutive victory over the Falcons.
