ASHLAND, Wis. -- The UW-Superior men's soccer team and Northland played to a scoreless draw at Ponzio Stadium on Saturday in the Upper Midwest Ahletic Conference opener for both teams.
The result marked the first time in 14 all-time matches in the UMAC era that the Yellowjackets dropped a conference-standings point to the LumberJacks.
A tight and physical match that was moved up an hour in start time due to threat of lightning, it featured nine cautions, including five to Northland, and one inside the first minute of action.
The Yellowjackets (2-2-1, 0-0-1) carried much of the play, holding 52 percent of possession for the night and outshooting Northland, 16-6, overall and 8-3 in shots on target. UWS sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Paredes (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) turned aside three LumberJacks' shots -- including attempts from Jonah Evans and Nick Diaz 10 minutes apart in the second half. His counterpart, Jamie Colvill, was busy on the other end, making five stops in the opening 45 minutes
The Yellowjackets seemed to finally have broken through the Northland (0-4-2, 0-0-1) defense late in the match, only to have a goal scored from inside the penalty area disallowed.
Neither team could find the back of the net from that point before time expired.
UWS is back in action on Tuesday at Macalester at 7:30 p.m.
