ST. PAUL, Minn. – Junior
Andrea Stelling (Sioux Falls, S.D./Eaton Rapids (Mich.)) scored midway through the third period to lift the UW-Superior women's hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Hamline in non-conference action at TRIA Rink on Tuesday.
Â
The win secured a season series sweep of the Pipers for the first time since the 2013-14 season and extended the Yellowjackets' winning streak to four consecutive games overall. UWS improves to 8-7-0 on the season while dropping HU to 6-7-0. UWS beat Hamline, 5-3, in the home opener on Nov. 4.Â
Â
Stelling's first career game-winning goal came at 10:07 of the third when a Hamline player fanned on a breakout pass at the blue line. Stelling picked up the puck and went in alone, beating goaltender Airika Penney high on the blocker side for a 3-1 lead. The unassisted goal was the second marker the season for Stelling.
Â
Superior sophomore
Darbie Mattson (Atikokan, Ontario/Atikokan) was then whistled for tripping at 13:11 and the Pipers called timeout to set up their power play. The strategy worked, as Sydney Lemke scored from a sharp angle to draw to within 3-2 at 14:36.
Â
Junior
Kailey Swerhun (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius) put the game out of reach, however, at 17:24 as she corralled a bouncing puck in the neutral zone and skated in on Penney for her first goal of the year.
Â
The Yellowjackets overcame a 34-25 deficit in shots for the game and won 36-of-59 faceoffs (61 percent) on the night.
Â
UWS opened the scoring at 17:26 of the first period as junior
Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) won a draw in the left circle to freshman
Anna Scherling (Rogers, Minn./Rogers), whose shot found space underneath Penney's pads for the 1-0 lead. It was the third goal of the season for Scherling.
Â
Hamline's Emme Nelson beat UWS junior goalie
Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) on a scramble in front of the net at the first-period buzzer to knot the game at 1-1 going into intermission.
Â
Sophomore
Cora Coz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) scored at 5:54 of the second as UWS retook the lead. On the play, her shot from the left circle found its way through a screen and Penney, making it 2-1. The unassisted goal was her fourth of the year.
Â
Beeman earned the win in net, making 32 saves to improve to 6-4-0 overall. Penney (2-2-0) took the loss for Hamline, turning aside 21 shots.
Â
Hamline went 1-for-5 on the power play and UWS was 0-for-2.
Â
UWS jumps back into WIAC play this weekend with a home-and-home series against No. 10 UW-Eau Claire. Puck drop at Hobbs Ice Center in Eau Claire, Wis., on Friday is set for 7 p.m.
