SUPERIOR, Wis. --Â The UW-Superior men's basketball team won for the eighth time in nine games on Friday, closing its non-conference slate with an 82-71 victory over Finlandia, at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
Â
Sophomore
T.J. Moberg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) scored a game-high 19 points on 7-for-10 from the field to lead three Yellowjackets in double figures as UWS (11-7) beat Finlandia (3-17) for the second time in 10 days.
Â
Superior shot 60.3 percent from the floor as a team, going 35-of-58 overall, including a 62.07 mark (18-of-29) after halftime.
Â
UWS, which led, 40-34, at the break, received 11 points from Moberg in the opening 20 minutes and 11 of the 14 points by senior
Josef Fahrenholtz (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield) in the second half. Fahrenholtz led all players in securing 11 rebounds for his third career double-double -- all coming this season.Â
Â
Senior
Levy Miguel (Luanda, Angola/Canarias Basketball Academy) posted his second consecutive double-digit scoring outing with 12 points in 25 minutes in his first career start at UWS.
Â
Superior led most of the way, using a 12-0 run with 12:19 remaining in the game to build its largest lead as
Reid Johnson (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield) stripped Danny Zuchak of the ball and
Andrew Kunelius (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia) found
Ty Melchert (Green Bay, Wis./Green Bay Southwest) ahead for a layup in transition and a 63-44 edge. From there, Finlandia rallied, cutting the deficit to 67-60 on a Logan DePew 3-pointer with 7:52 remaining.Â
Â
Later, Emmett Johnson converted a layup on the break following a DePew steal, slicing the UWS advantage to 71-68 with 4:45 on the clock. That, though, was as close as the Lions got as UWS held Finlandia to just one more Johnson triple the rest of the night.
Â
UWS boasted a 38-27 advantage in rebounding and dominated inside, scoring 52 points in the paint.
Â
Emmett Johnson and Octavius Johnson paced Finlandia with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Octavius Johnson added eight rebounds and two steals. Connor Smale chipped in 12 points for the Lions.
Â
UWS heads to Ashland, Wis., Saturday for a 3 p.m., date with Northland at Kendrigan Gymnasium.
