ASHLAND, Wis. -- The UW-Superior women's basketball team held Northland to single digits in the second and fourth quarters in a 63-46 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference victory at Kendrigan Gymnasium on Saturday.
The win halted the Yellowjackets' five-game losing streak and gave UWS its 22nd consecutive win over Northland. Superior has not lost to the LumberJills since joining the UMAC for the 2015-16 season, and is 40-18 overall against its northwestern Wisconsin rivals since the 1983-84 season.
Senior
Kaelyn Christian (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville Senior) paced UWS with 15 points, adding five rebounds and a game-high four assists, as the 'Jackets benefitted from a balanced scoring effort in the win. Freshman
Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) scored a season-high 10 points and was the only other UWS player in double figures.
Sophomore
Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) and freshman
MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) added eight points apiece while junior
Sam Parendo (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) had seven points and a career-high 11 boards. Senior
Mady Sanders (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) also ripped down 11 rebounds, her fifth double-digit total of the season and second in as many games.
UWS (6-11, 4-4 UMAC), which led, 33-22, at halftime, outscored Northland (5-11, 1-7), 30-24, in the second half. The LumberJills committed 14 turnovers and shot just shy of 31 percent for the game, scoring nine points in the second and eight in the fourth.
Superior won the rebounding battle, 49-29, turning 21 offensive boards into 20 second-chance points. UWS converted 17-of-21 free throws for a season-best 81 percent from the line.
Northland received 19 points on 8-for-18 shooting and seven rebounds from Miranda Wagner in a losing effort.
UWS returns home to host Martin Luther Friday at 7:15 p.m., at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
