Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Saint Benedict scored two goals in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and earn a 4-2 victory over the UW-Superior women's hockey team in non-conference action at Wessman Arena on Tuesday.

Junior Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) drew the Yellowjackets even with a quick wrister at 17:28 of the second from Brynn MacLean (Wilcox, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) and Emma Booth (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd). Hoops' seventh goal of the year, which tied her for the team lead, came just 54 seconds after the Bennies took the lead, 2-1.

Jaime Bimberg's shot at 16:34 of the frame from the right point found its way through a screen. Presley Kraemer assisted on that marker.

Jaime Benzie scored the go-ahead goal at 2:36 of the third when she stole the puck from Booth and curled off the right-wing boards before wiring a wrist shot over the glove of UWS goaltender Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School). Sydney Hunst picked up the assist on the play.

CSB (10-8-0) put game out of reach at 13:39 of the third as Ava Stinnett scored on the rebound of an Aurora Opsahl shot. Emma Rooks also assisted on the goal.

The Bennies outshot UWS, 45-19, on the night, but Superior scored first. Junior Kailey Swerhun (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius) did the honors as she won a race to the puck, worked her way around a pair of defenders and slipped a backhander underneath goalie Donelle Decker for the lead at 12:51 of the first period.

Opsahl knotted the game, 1-1, at 6:15 of the second, converting the rebound of a Stinnett shot.

Decker earned the win in the Saint Benedict net in her first appearance of the season, making 17 saves. Beeman took the loss, falling to 6-9-0, despite stopping 41 shots.

Both teams were scoreless on the power play; CSB came up empty in three chances with an extra skater and UWS did not score on its two opportunities in the game.

UWS (8-12-0) closes its regular-season home slate Saturday at 7 p.m., when it welcomes No. 1-ranked UW-River Falls to Wessman Arena.
