DULUTH, Minn. – After picking up an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) victory against Bethany Lutheran Saturday, the Yellowjacket women's soccer team took the pitch just hours later, facing off against St. Scholastica.
Junior forward
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) has put together another strong season so far, currently sitting in first place for assists and second in goals scored, total points and shots for the 'Jackets. She would find the back of the net twice against the Saints, leading UWS to a 3-1 victory over the bridge-rival.
Holmquist would get things started rather quickly after the first whistle, scoring in just 52 seconds off a helper from senior
Lindrey Schendel (Firestone, Colo./Skyline).
Roughly eight minutes later senior
Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake) fired a shot that beat Saints goalkeeper Brianna Jorgenson off an assist from sophomore
Kamryn Hill (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld), extending the Yellowjackets' lead by two goals.
The Saints wouldn't go down quietly, though, as Tenley Voth sparked the scoring in the 11th minute to cut down the 'Jackets' lead 2-1. Both teams mustered up scoring opportunities for the duration of the first half, but both goalkeepers held their own.
In the 68th minute of play Holmquist would strike again, firing a goal from teammates
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and
Olivia Soltero (Washburn, Wis./Washburn), giving the 'Jackets a 3-1 lead and ultimately a match victory.
Holmquist led the offensive charge Sunday, taking three shots with two on frame. Junior
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and sophomore
Quinn Clark (Duluth Minn./Duluth East) split goalkeeping duties, with Lang earning the start on the afternoon. Lang saved one shot from the Saints, while Clark added four to her season total of 31.
The Yellowjackets return to the NBC Spartan Sports Complex Wednesday to face North Central with a kickoff time of 1 p.m.
