SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's soccer team has played quality soccer throughout the 2023 season. Specifically in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC), the 'Jackets have put themselves in a strong position heading into the remainder of the regular season. Wednesday's match featured the Rams of North Central and UW-Superior, and the Yellowjackets were firing on all cylinders.
Senior
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) completed the hat trick and freshman
Julia Lindow (Richfield, Minn./Richfield) commenced her collegiate scoring with two goals as the Yellowjackets dominated the pitch, defeating North Central 11-0 and tieing the program record for most-goals scored in a match.
UWS got the match started on the right foot, as Wilson picked up her first goal of the match in the fifth minute. Teammate
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) received an assist on Wilson's 15th goal of the season and 57th in her Yellowjacket career.
The Yellowjackets remained on the offensive, firing multiple shots at Rams goalkeeper Abigail Herbolsheimer. During the 21st minute, senior
Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake) took a feed from
Brynne Crystal (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and gave the 'Jackets a 2-0 lead.
As inclement weather approached the NBC Spartan Sports Complex, this prompted head coach
Allison DeGroot to tap into her bench and keep the Yellowjackets sharp throughout the match. One of the substitutes DeGroot called on was
Tori Vosburg (Cloquet, Minn./Esko), and at the 25th minute she answered the call, firing a shot past Herbolsheimer which resulted in a 3-0 lead. Roughly five minutes later, Wilson tallied her second goal of the match courtesy of
Halle Carlson (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown).
Another five minutes would pass, and Wilson struck again at the 34th minute, this time from freshman
Julia Lindow (Richfield, Minn./Richfield). The Yellowjackets took a commanding 5-0 lead, while also activating the fan favorite Five Goal Free for All, where all fans in attendance received a free scoop of custard courtesy of Culver's in Superior.
During the second half of play, the Yellowjackets continued the offensive attack, as Holmquist scored a goal of her own courtesy of Lindow at the 51st minute. Roughly six minutes later, Lindow fired a shot off a feed from
Olivia Ott (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) that found the back of the net, resulting in her first collegiate goal and extending the 'Jackets' lead at 7-0.
The next UWS goal came courtesy of senior midfielder
Kaitlyn Raisch (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins), notching her second goal of the season and fourth of her career, extending the 'Jacket lead to 8-0. At the 70th minute of play, sophomore
Taylor DeCook (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) scored courtesy of a touch from
Ava Giswold (Duluth, Minn./Proctor), which was the first of her Yellowjacket career.
The Yellowjackets were not done yet, as Lindow picked up her second goal at the 80th minute for a 10-0 lead. Capping the 'Jacket scoring was
Liberty Dickerson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) at the 82nd minute of play, courtesy of DeCook.
The lone Yellowjacket to play a full 90 minutes was junior goalkeeper
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), who didn't see any shots throughout the match. The 'Jackets fired a total of 43 shots, with 25 reaching the mark. The Rams ended the evening with one shot on goal.
Holmquist rifled seven shots throughout the match, as four Yellowjackets ended their evening with four shots.
