NEW ULM, Minn. – The Yellowjacket men's soccer team faced off against Martin Luther Saturday afternoon. After scoring two goals against North Central Wednesday, senior forward
Phillip Eriksen (Skjetten, Norway/Lorenskog) scored another two goals against the Knights, leading UWS to a 3-0 victory.
Saturday's win marks the Yellowjackets' eighth Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) win in a row, who currently hold possession of first place.
UW-Superior started the offensive attack early, with various Yellowjackets taking shots to test Zachary Pausma in goal for the Knights. Opening the scoring for UWS was Brazilian midfielder
Felipe Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Soma), who scored in the 23rd minute of play, grasping a 1-0 lead.
Both teams traded shots for roughly 20 minutes until Eriksen took a feed from
Gavin Watkinson (Lakeville, Minn./Farmington Area) and beat Pausma, giving the 'Jackets a 2-0 lead at the 42nd minute.
The Yellowjackets continued the offensive attack, with Watkinson taking two shots and
Henry Dyson (Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England/Hartpury College) accounting for one of the 24 total shots in the first half.
Eriksen would strike again in the 54th minute, this time receiving an assist from
Jacob Wyles (Watlington, Oxfordshire/FAB Academy) and giving the 'Jackets a 3-0 advantage over the Knights.
Eriksen's goal would cap the scoring for the evening, bringing the Yellowjackets to 13-3-2 and 11-1 in conference action.
Josh Bellamy (High Wycombe, England/FAB Football Academy) and
Gavin Watkinson (Lakeville, Minn./Farmington Area) each finished their afternoons with six shots taken, while Dyson accounted for five. The Yellowjackets ended with 41 total shots, 28 of which were on target.
Earning the start in goal was
Patrick Sessions (Brighton, England/Brighton, Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College), who faired well in his second start of the campaign. In 75 minutes of action, he picked up three saves before giving way to
Daniel Young (Chino Hills, Calif./Ruben S. Ayala) making his collegiate debut in net. He faced just one shot in the final 15 minutes of play.
The Yellowjackets are back in action Tuesday as they face Northland on senior day. Match time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
