SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin Superior men's soccer team faced off against Northland College Tuesday night, with the opportunity clinch the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season title on the line. With a tie, the Yellowjackets would clinch at least a tie for the conference title. With a victory, the Yellowjackets would win the title outright for the sixth year in a row.
After Northland scored midway through the second half to tie the match,
Phillip Eriksen (Skjetten, Norway/Lorenskog), the reigning UMAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, answered a few minutes later, giving the Yellowjackets a 2-1 win.
The Yellowjackets (14-3-2, 12-1-0 UMAC) not only won the UMAC regular season title, but more importantly clinched the No. 1 seed in the UMAC Tournament. The 'Jackets will host a semifinal match Wednesday, Nov. 1 at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
In the 23rd minute of play
Mackie Ringrose (Ewhurst, England/St. Peter's Catholic School), would score first for the Yellowjackets. Ringrose would head the ball into the lower left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. With a pass from the right side of the pitch,
Nicolai Stokker (Klokkarstua, Norway/St. Hallvard) would be credited for the assist. Ringrose now with four goals on the season.
In the 60th minute Harrison Tibbetts would score for LumberJacks, tying the match 1-1. Goalkeeper
Alex Paredes (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) would get piece of it before it would trickle past him. Carey Thomas would be credited with the assist.
The tie didn't last long, as the Yellowjackets used a set piece to regain the lead.
Felipe Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Soma), off a corner kick would find
Phillip Eriksen (Skjetten, Norway/Lorenskog), and he would find the back of the net with a perfectly placed kick to the middle of the goal giving the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead. With a physical last 23 minutes of play, the 'Jackets had four more shots on goal but could not find the back of the net.
Paredes would get his 17th start in net for the Yellowjackets and would pick up the win. He was forced to make just one save in the match and improved his record to 12-3-2.
The Yellowjackets are back in action Saturday, Oct. 28 as they travel to Crown for more UMAC play to finish out the remainder of the regular season. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Old National Bank Stadium.
