SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's soccer team took the pitch at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex against Northland. With a victory or tie over the LumberJills Wednesday, UWS would secure the third-consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season title in program history.
The Yellowjackets got the job done.
After a goal from freshman
Olivia Soltero (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) and two from senior
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), the Yellowjackets defeated Northland by a score of 3-0, securing home-field advantage for the UMAC tournament.
The Yellowjackets would go on the offensive early, testing LumberJill goalkeeper Elysabeth Lough with shots from Wilson,
Ava Giswold (Duluth, Minn./Proctor),
Halle Carlson (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown),
Tori Vosburg (Cloquet, Minn./Esko) and
Erika Schneider (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West). As the match went on, the 'Jackets continued to apply the offensive pressure. At the 33rd minute of play Vosburg sent a ball to
Olivia Soltero (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) who took a shot on the right foot that Lough got a glove on, but the ball would hit the post and sneak in net to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.
Roughly eight minutes of play would commence when Soltero would dribble the ball just outside of the 18 and fire a cross to Wilson, who played a high ball that beat Lough for the 'Jackets' second goal on the night.
After halftime, the Yellowjackets continued to apply pressure, as a strong throw-in from Carlson set up a play that would feature Wilson utilize a nifty heel-flick goal off a feed from
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo), giving the 'Jackets a 3-0 lead in the 50th minute and Wilson her 22nd goal on the campaign.
UW-Superior would run into additional scoring opportunities throughout the match, but Lough maintained her ground and made a handful of impressive saves on the evening despite taking the loss in goal.
The Yellowjacket defense was dominant throughout, not allowing a single shot for Northland. Junior goalkeeper
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) got the start in goal and secured her 17th career shutout and sixth on the season.
Wilson and Holmquist would take seven and six total shots throughout the match, respectively, while senior
Kaitlyn Raisch (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) ended her evening with five. In total, the Yellowjackets rifled 38 shots with 13 on target.
The Yellowjackets conclude UMAC regular season action as they face Crown Saturday. Kickoff at Old National Bank Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
