Bellamy Hat Trick Leads Yellowjackets to a 6-0 Rout of St. Scholastica

Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Superior and the College of St. Scholastica have a rich athletic history. The Saints first joined the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) in the mid-1980s, while the remaining varsity programs transitioned in 1995.

While a UMAC member they had a successful run, winning a total of 210 regular season championships and 106 postseason titles. In 2020 the institution announced a full-time membership with the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) which began in the 2021-22 season.

Despite St. Scholastica's transition to another conference, this wouldn't hinder the ongoing bridge-rivalry with the Yellowjackets. Coming into Wednesday's match, UWS held a seven-match winning streak against the Saints.

From the opening whistle the Yellowjackets dominated the pitch, defeating the Saints 6-0 under the lights at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

It didn't take long for the scoring to commence, as Yellowjacket junior Josh Bellamy (High Wycombe, England/FAB Football Academy) fired a shot that beat Saints goalkeeper Liam Lothian in the third minute of play.

Nicolai Stokker (Klokkarstua, Norway/St. Hallvard) would extend the 'Jacket lead with a goal of his own just minutes later, courtesy of a Mackie Ringrose (Ewhurst, England/St. Peter's Catholic School) assist that brought UWS ahead 2-0.

From there, only five minutes ticked off the scoreboard when Yellowjacket newcomer Felipe Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Soma) made his presence known on the pitch, utilizing some nifty footwork to beat Saints defenders, and taking a feed from Stokker and Jake Kidd (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) that found the back of the net for a 3-0 lead.

The 'Jackets would keep Lothian on his toes throughout the first half, rifling a total of 16 shots.

Nearing the 56th minute of play UWS was primed to score again, but a costly offside brought the scoring opportunity to a halt for the time being.

Bellamy scored his second goal of the match and fifth on the season at the 63rd minute of play, taking a shot after a touch from Stokker to extend the 'Jackets' lead to 4-0. Three minutes later the Saints were called for a handball in the box, triggering a penalty kick opportunity. Bellamy would score on the PK, finishing the hat trick and sparking the Five Goal Free for All, where fans in attendance received a coupon for a free scoop of custard from Culver's in Superior.

After taking a commanding lead, Yellowjacket head coach Joe Mooney, who recently picked up his 200th career win Saturday, started to remove his starting lineup from the match and presented opportunities for newcomers to make a name for themselves.

Freshman midfielder Harvey McLoughlin (London, England/Highgate Woods) would make his presence known in the 85th minute, netting a shot from Phillip Eriksen (Skjetten, Norway/Lorenskog) for his first collegiate goal and securing the 6-0 victory over St. Scholastica.

The Yellowjackets led the Saints in total shots (33-3), shots-on-goal (16-2), and corner kicks (11-0) on the evening.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Paredes (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) picked up his third-consecutive clean sheet after stopping two saves. Lothian was tallied with the loss after making ten saves.

Bellamy led the offensive attack for the 'Jackets, firing six total shots with five on frame. Oliveira and Kidd each fired four, and five Yellowjackets accounted for two shots each.

UWS (8-2-2, 6-1-0 UMAC) return to conference play Saturday Oct. 7, facing off against the Cougars from Minnesota Morris. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
