STEVENS POINT, Wis. – After a disappointing 2-2 tie with Northland Friday afternoon, the Yellowjacket women's hockey team continued WIAC play Saturday with another road contest at UW-Stevens Point.
The Yellowjackets would finally get their groove back with a 5-1 win, and earned their first conference win of the 2023-24 season.
Ashton Parnell (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) scored twice, and
Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) stopped 37 shots as the 'Jackets got back in the win column. Doing just that, the Yellowjackets would advance their record to 1-1-1 in the WIAC. The win put a stop to the Yellowjackets' (3-3-1) four-game winless streak and brought their record back to .500 for the year.
In first period play the Pointers would get on the scoresheet first as Courtney Leising would find the back of the net in just the seventh minute of play. Annika Horman would be credited with the assist to put the Pointers up 1-0.
Cora Coz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River), the leading scorer for the Yellowjackets set the tone for the second period just five minutes in and would tie it up 1-1.
Anna Scherling (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) picked up her second point of the year with an assist on the goal.
Kaylin Garner (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) would get the go-ahead goal for the 'Jackets making it 2-1 as she would find her own rebound and would bury one, unassisted.
Three minutes into the third period,
Jada LeBlanc (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute) would skate the puck all the way up the ice from her own zone and would put one under the crossbar. LeBlanc's first goal of the year would give the 'Jackets the 3-1 lead.
Later in the third, Parnell would give the Yellowjackets a more comfortable lead, 4-1. In the 11th minute, UW-Stevens point would take a penalty and give the Yellowjackets an opportunity on the power play that they would soon take advantage of. LeBlanc would make the pass over to
Darbie Mattson (Atikokan, Ontario/Atikokan) who would find Parnell on the weak side, and she would fire a sharp shot finding the back of the net.
With just under five minutes left in the game, the Pointers would pull their goalie in favor of an extra skater to try and shorten the Yellowjacket lead, but Parnell would net her second of the game with an empty net goal in the 15th minute of play.
Brynn MacLean (Wilcox, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) would be credited with the assist as the 'Jackets moved in front 5-1.
Beeman would get her seventh start of the season this afternoon for the Yellowjackets, and she would have another busy night as the Yellowjackets were outshot 38-29.
The Yellowjackets are back in action at home on Tuesday, Nov.21 with a quick turnaround against St. Scholastica. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. at Siinto S. Wessman Arena.
