SUPERIOR, Wis.—The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was at home Tuesday afternoon as they faced the College of St. Scholastica for a bridge battle in its final game before Thanksgiving break.
After a slow start to the first period,
Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) would get things started for the Yellowjackets in the 15th minute of play. With a pass from
Kaylin Garner (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) to
Darbie Mattson (Atikokan, Ontario/Atikokan) on the point, Hoops would tip the puck past the St. Scholastica goaltender, giving the 'Jackets a 1-0 lead to close out the first period.
The second period was similar to the first, in that chances were really hard to come by. That changed when they Yellowjackets got a power play opportunity that they would take advantage of in the 18th minute of the. The play started with a pass from Hoops to Garner, and Garner would take a shot from the point where it found
Libby Kamp (Bloomington, Minn./Holy Family) in front of the net for the tip to give the Yellowjackets the lone goal of the second period, putting the 'Jackets in front 2-0 after 40 minutes.
With a quick start in the third, just 20 seconds in, the Saints would close the gap to 2-1 as Allie Bussey would take a top right corner shot that would trickle over the glove of the 'Jackets goaltender. Lauryn Hull and Hanley Block would be credited with the assist.
Later into the third period, in the 10th minute, Hoops from the corner would find
Lucy Drougas (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) coming down the slot, Drougas would go top left to advance the Yellowjackets to a 3-1 lead.
In the 17th minute of the third period, Bussey would again find the back of the net for the Saints and close the gap to once again, a one goal game.
That's as close as the Saints would get, and the Yellowjackets would close out the 3-2 win.
Goaltender
Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) made her eighth start of the year would have a total of 24 saves on night, getting her fourth win in net this year. (4-3-1)
The Yellowjackets are back in action Friday, Dec. 8 when they travel to St. Olaf. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
