KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The United Soccer Coaches (USC) released its all-region teams in an announcement Tuesday, and three Yellowjacket women's soccer players were recognized for Region IX in 2023.
Junior
Brenna Mattson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior) and senior
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) picked up second team recognition, and senior
Lindrey Schendel (Firestone, Colo./Skyline) was selected to the third team.
The Yellowjackets have now earned five selections from the USC, after Wilson and Schendel earned honors in 2022 and Annah Schussman nabbed the first selection in UWS history in 2021.
Mattson saw herself earn a second team citation for her efforts in the 2023 season. Also being named as the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Defensive Player of the Year, she led the Yellowjacket backline in efforts that allowed just one goal per match and 8.3 shots per match. Starting in all 20 matches played, she played a team-fourth 1,546 minutes on the pitch.
Wilson picked up her second USC accolade after starting in all 23 matches. Leading the team and sitting in second within the UMAC with 26 goals, she boosted her lead as the Yellowjackets' all-time scorer with a total of 68 goals. Additionally, she ended the year with 1,598 minutes played, firing a total of 87 shots with 57 on frame for a 65.5 shots-on-goal percentage.
Schendel also adds another third team nod for her 2023 season. After starting in all 23 matches, she compiled a team-best 1,607 minutes, scoring two goals and five assists for nine points on the midline. Schendel also pitched in a strong defensive output, pitching in efforts that limited the opposition to just one goal a match and only 8.3 shots per match.
The Yellowjackets claimed their third UMAC title in as many years and made it to the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight season, finishing the 2023 campaign with an overall record of 16-6-1.
