SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Coming off last week's sweep of Lawrence University at home, the Yellowjacket women's hockey team put on their road sweaters for the first time this season Friday, traveling for a Friday night tile at Hamline.
Â
A year ago the teams also met in the third game of the season, with the Yellowjackets grabbing the 5-3 win from the Pipers. Hamline didn't forget the loss, and entered play Friday with revenge on its mind.
Â
And revenge, Hamline got.
Â
The Pipers scored early and often, using a strong first period to push past the Yellowjackets 5-2 at TRIA Rink Friday.
Â
The loss was the first defeat of the season for the Yellowjackets (2-1-0, 0-0-0 WIAC).
Â
Hamline opened the scoring just 1:07 into the game when Cheyenne Abear beat Yellowjacket goaltender
Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) to make it 1-0. Midway through the period the Pipers extended the lead with a power play goal. Hamline needed just eight seconds of power play time to score, as Emme Nelson potted a goal at 11:14 to make it a 2-0 score.
Â
The Pipers added to the lead early in the second, again scoring before the period was two minutes old. Again it was on the power play, and again it was Nelson doing the damage, scoring her second of the game just 1:26 into the middle frame to extend the lead to 3-0. Late in the period it went to 4-0, as Annika Lindgren scored at 17:13.
Â
UWS finally found its offense in the third period, breaking the Hamline shutout bid. On the power play,
Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) got a good look and made it count, scoring her second of the year at 14:09 to make it 4-1.
Ashton Parnell (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and
Lucy Drougas (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) assisted on the goal.
Â
It stayed that way until the final minute of the game, when each team found the back of the net.
Â
The Yellowjacket goal came via the penalty shot. Known as the most exciting play in hockey, Yellowjacket
Kaylin Garner (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) was awarded the chance, and she made no mistake, scoring her first goal as a Yellowjacket to pull the 'Jackets to within one at 4-2. The goal came with 47.2 seconds left on the clock.
Â
Just 24 seconds later, however, any hopes of a comeback were extinguished when Ashley Grabeau scored, making the final score 5-2.
Â
Each team took four penalties for eight minutes in the contest. Hamline scored twice on the power play, while the Yellowjackets notched one power play goal.
Â
Beeman went the distance in goal for the Yellowjackets Friday, finishing with a season-high 40 saves. The Yellowjackets were outshot 42-18 in the game.
Â
The Yellowjackets will be back home Saturday afternoon when they host Augsburg University. The opening faceoff is set for 5 p.m. at Wessman Arena.
