MOORHEAD, Minn. - Â The Yellowjacket women's hockey team continued non-conference action Friday, hitting the road for a series against the Cobbers of Concordia College. Despite the 'Jackets striking first, the Cobbers rallied in the third period of play to earn a 2-1 victory inside the Moorhead Sports Center.
Â
After just two minutes in period number one, the Yellowjackets would take an early penalty. Nevertheless, the 'Jackets would only allow two shots, with one being saved by goaltender
Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School). The Cobbers began to create more shot opportunities after their power play, but Beeman held her own and thwarted any hope of an early goal.
Â
After the halfway point of the period, Concordia's Jayda Krikorian would receive two minutes for hooking, but the Yellowjackets were unable to convert on the power play. As the final five minutes of play ticked off the scoreboard, both teams took a few shots but were unable to capitalize.
Â
The Yellowjackets would score the first goal of the contest courtesy of
Maddie Rewertz (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing), who picked up her first of the season with a helping hand from
Brynn MacLean (Wilcox, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) and
Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) at 5:29 in the second period. Minutes later the Cobbers would get called for slashing, giving the 'Jackets an opportunity to extend their lead. Despite Hoops,
Cora Coz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and
Darbie Mattson (Atikokan, Ontario/Atikokan) keeping Concordia's goaltender Hailee Bailey incredibly busy, she held her ground between the pipes and picked up five quick saves. Play would carry on but neither team would strike for the remainder of the period.
Â
Business for the Cobbers picked up in the third, as Jerica Friese took a feed from teammates Taylyn Cope and Abbey Reule to notch the game-tying goal just four minutes into the period. At 9:35 the Yellowjackets were called for hooking, which opened the door for the Cobbers to rifle a shot past Beeman and take the lead. Taylor Severson fired the shot with assists credited to Paige Hanson and Grace Doerring. Multiple Yellowjackets attempted to sneak one past Bailey, but she helped maintain the lead until the third period came to an end, edging the Yellowjackets at home by a 2-1 decision.
Â
Beeman took the loss on the evening after saving 19 of 21 shots faced. She falls to 4-6-1 on the campaign. For the Cobbers, Bailey would make 13 saves on the evening, picking up her first win of the 2023-24 season.
Â
The Yellowjackets are back in action Saturday, finishing their series with Concordia College. Puck drop inside the Moorhead Sports Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
