Yellowjackets Even Season Series with Stevens Point in 3-2 Win Friday

STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- Sophomore Gaby Andreacchi's (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Patrick) empty netter with 58 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winning goal Friday as the UW-Superior women's hockey team evened the season series with UW-Stevens Point with a 3-2 victory at K.B. Willett Arena.

The Pointers' Lauren Wincentsen scored just 45 later to account for the final margin after the Yellowjackets scored twice in a 3:19 span late in the first period to take the lead.

The win for Superior, which snapped a six-game drought, moves UWS to 9-13-0 overall and 2-7-0 in the WIAC. Stevens Point fell to 10-12-1 and 4-7-0 with the loss.

UWSP opened the scoring with a power-goal goal at 11:30 of the first by Maddie Anderle. Katie Staniusassisted on the goal.

Senior C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) tied the game, 1-1, 4:02 later with her third goal of the year from junior Kailey Swerhun (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius). Sophomore Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) added her team-leading eighth goal of the season from junior Avery Schwark (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) to regain the lead.

Andreacchi's goal was her fifth of the season and second game winner.

Junior goaltender Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) earned the win the Yellowjackets' net with 38 saves, including 16 in a scoreless second period, improving to 7-9-0. UWSP's Olivia Schultz fell to 10-12-1 with 26 saves.

Hoops paced UWS with five shots on goal while freshman Veda Roeske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) and sophomore Emma Booth (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) had three apiece.

The Pointers were 1-for-6 with 12 shots on the power play and UWS was scoreless in its only extra-skater opportunity with two shots.

The same teams close the weekend series Saturday with a 2:30 p.m., puck drop at K.B. Willett Arena.
