STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- Sophomore
Darbie Mattson (Atikokan, Ontario/Atikokan) scored her first two collegiate goals and earned her first career multiple-point game, but UW-Stevens Point skated past the UW-Superior women's hockey team, 5-3, at K.B. Willett Arena on Saturday.
Mattson's first goal of the game at 6:31 of the second period tied it, 2-2, before SoileDoyle helped the Pointers regain the lead at 17:48 of the period. Mattson's equalizer was assisted by
Kailey Swerhun (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius) and
Gaby Andreacchi (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Patrick).
Josie Bender pushed Stevens Point's lead to 4-2 at 2:07 of the third with the first of three unassisted markers in the final 20 minutes. Mattson added her second at 17:59 on the power play, but UWSP (11-12-1, 5-7-0 WIAC) put the game away with an Annika Horman goal at 19:11.
Natalie Ahern scored with an assist from Kayla Stumo at the 6:03 mark of the first period for a 1-0 lead prior to a power-play marker by
C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) 1:02 of the second knotted the game for the first time. Mattson assisted on the fourth goal of the season by Hayes.
Horman made it 2-1 50 seconds later with another unassisted tally.
UWS (9-14-0, 2-8-0) went 2-for-5 on the power play and outshot UWSP 36-25. Olivia Schultz picked up the victory in net with 33 saves while
Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) took the loss, stopping 20 shots.
The Yellowjackets heads to Northland Friday at 7 p.m., for the first of two games at the Bay Area Civic Center next weekend.
