SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Cora Schmitz (Luck, Wis./Unity),
Myla Volk (Wabeno, Wis./Wabeno),
Alexxa DeQuevedo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley) and
Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool) won the 4x200-meter relay in 1:54.51 as the UW-Superior women's track and field team sits atop the standings after the first day of competition in the 2023 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference indoor championship at Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse.
The Yellowjackets, shooting for their first UMAC indoor title, scored 84.5 points on the day to lead second-place Bethany Lutheran by 17.5 points. Martin Luther is third overall with 40 points.
UWS scored 12 points in the 5,000-meter run as
Halle Barker (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) placed third (20:20.48),
Tea Boerner (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna Senior) was fifth (21:05.39) and
Jeanna Scanlon (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon) was seventh (21:54.05).
Barker,
Jess Newman (Wanamingo, Minn./Pine Island),
Cora Hudella (North Branch, Minn./North Branch Area), and
Meagan Berg (Tomahawk, Wis./Tomahawk) ran second in the distance medley relay in a time of 14:32.68.
DeQuevedo, Volk and
Sidney Bader (Milltown, Wis./Unity) each scored in the high jump. DeQuevedo was second at 1.44 meters, Volk fifth at 1.37 meters and Bader tied for seventh at 1.30 meters.
DeQuevedo and Claude placed second and third, respectively, in the long jump in 4.66 and 4.31 meters.
Superior tallied 18 points in the weight throw as
Kasha Hughlett (Maple, Wis./Northwestern) was second with a mark of 15.39 meters in second,
Emma Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Falls) was third at 12.99 meters and
Kenzie Tuura (Iron River, Wis./Northwestern) was fifth overall at 12.33 meters.
Day two of the meet begins at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday.
