nSUPERIOR, Wis. -- The UW-Superior women's track and field team won its first-ever Upper Midwest Athletic Conference indoor championship Saturday at Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse.
The Yellowjackets scored 171.5 points over the two-day event, topping second-place Bethany Lutheran by 28.5. Minnesota Morris (93.5) was third, followed by Crown (86).
While UWS did not win any events Saturday after taking one Friday, Superior posted three second-place finishes on the day. Senior
Alexxa DeQuevedo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley) was second in the 60-meter hurdles in a personal record of 9.53 seconds, freshman
Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool) was second in the 200 meters with a PR of 27.65 and
Myla Volk (Wabeno, Wis./Wabeno) was second in the triple jump at 9.56 meters.
Claude, DeQuevedo and
Kenzy Kreuzer (Stoddard, Wis./De Soto) were third overall in the in the 60 meters, 200 meters and pole vault, respectively. Claude ran a PR of 8.36 in the 60, DeQuevedo ran 27.96 in the 200 and Kreuzer was third with a PR of 2.25 meters in the pole vault.
DeQuevedo tied Kreuzer with a mark of 2.25 meters in the pole vault, finishing fourth overall.
The 4x400-meter relay squad of DeQuevedo, Volk,
Cora Schmitz (Luck, Wis./Unity) and Claude ran 4:35.13 for third place in that race.
Schmitz was fourth in the 60-meter dash behind Claude with a PR of 8.56 seconds.
Jess Newman (Wanamingo, Minn./Pine Island) and Kreuzer were sixth and seventh overall in the 60 hurdles in season bests of 11:42 and 11.79, respectively. Newman also finished sixth in the triple jump with a PR of 9.10 meters.
Schmitz was seventh in the 200 in 28.94, a personal record there.
Halle Barker (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and
Tea Boerner (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna Senior) each put up PRs in the 3,000 meters, running seventh and eighth, respectively, 11:47.91 in and 11:53.49.
Meagan Berg (Tomahawk, Wis./Tomahawk) grabbed an eighth-pace finish in the 800 meters in a season-best 2:39.10.
Finally, freshman
Sidney Bader (Milltown, Wis./Unity) and sophomore
Emma Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Falls) placed fifth and sixth overall in the shot put with personal-record marks of 10.34 and 10.14 meters.
Select Yellowjackets will head to the Ripon Final Qualifier next Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
