ORLANDO, Fla. – The Yellowjacket women's tennis team's bid to win its second match in a row came up just a bit short Tuesday afternoon.
After having their matches postponed Monday due to weather, the Yellowjackets finally took the hardcourt Tuesday, taking on the University of Scranton out of Scranton, Pa.
The Yellowjackets fell behind early, dropping all three doubles matches, before surging back in singles play. The comeback bid came up just short, however, and Scranton picked up the win, 5-4 over the Yellowjackets at Lake Cane Tennis Center.
The Yellowjackets will now take a 2-7 record (0-1 UMAC) into play Wednesday.
Tuesday the Yellowjackets went 4-2 in singles play, getting wins in positions three through six.
At No. 3 singles,
Courtney Brandt (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids Senior) defeated Brigid O'Mara in straight sets, by scores of 6-4, 6-3.
Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech), who had a strong outing last time out against Wisconsin Lutheran, earned another victory at No. 4 singles, defeating Taralyn Reilly of Scranton 6-3, 6-2.
Haley Quick (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) earned her second singles win of 2023, defeating Julia Nocentino at No. 5 singles 7-5, 7-6.
Jessi Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown), who was recently named UMAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, earned another victory in the No. 6 singles slot, defeating Grace Lennox in a another strong performance, 6-0, 6-3. It was Kukowski's fourth-straight singles victory in 2023.
The late surge was necessary because the Yellowjackets found things to be tough going in doubles play. Brandt and
Marina Dostal (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior) were paired at No. 1 doubles and fell 8-1 to Lily Nowak and Daniella Wisniewski of Scranton. Kukowski and
Shelby Hanson (Albert Lea, Minn./Albert Lea Senior) had a much tighter match at No. 2 doubles, falling 8-6 to Paige Hunt and Olivia Sirico. At No. 3 doubles, Wilfong and
Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) lost to Nocentino and Lydia Grossman 8-3.
Also in action Tuesday, Andrewina Tejada was defeated at No. 1 singles by Nowak, 6-0, 6-2, while Dostal fell to Wisniewski at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
The Yellowjackets are back in action Wednesday, when they will play matches against Westminster of Pennsylvania and Illinois Wesleyan.
