Softball Team Splits for the Second Straight Day at Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. – Different day, same result for the Yellowjacket softball team.

A day after opening the season with a split, the Yellowjackets played their second day of the UW-Oshkosh Invitational, and just like Saturday, the Yellowjackets had to settle for a split Sunday. The 'Jackets took their first game of the day Sunday, routing Lawrence 12-2 before falling to host UW-Oshkosh for the second time on the weekend, this time by a 3-0 score.

Game One
The Yellowjackets (2-2, 0-0 UMAC) scored early and often against Lawrence Sunday on the way to a win via the 10-run rule.

In the top of the first Larissa Snyder (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) scored on a squeeze bunt by Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) to put the Yellowjackets up early. Lawrence, however, answered in the bottom of the first, scoring twice to move in front 2-1.

From there, it was all Yellowjackets.

In the top of the second the Yellowjackets blew the game open, scoring five times to take a 6-2 lead. With one out Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) doubled and Izzy Lingle (Enumclaw, Wash./Enumclaw) followed with an infield single to bring Hoops home. MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Lingle, and Snyder followed with a ground-rule double to bring home Leccia. Tiffany Kirk (McHenry, Ill./McHenry East) reached on a fielder's choice that brought home two more runs, and when the dust settled the Yellowjackets were up four.

The Yellowjackets tagged on four more runs in the third to reach double digits. Snyer plated the first run of the inning with a bases loaded single, and another scored when Kraemer grounded out. Two more runs came home, making it 1-0, when Ellie Macal (Winona, Minn./Cotter) reached on an error.

In the fifth the Yellowjackets got their final two runs on ground outs from Hoops and Bryton Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown), making the final score 12-2.

Snyder had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two batted in. Kraemer also had a strong game at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Hoops, Lingle and Kirk all added two hits, as the Yellowjacket offense pounded out 13 hits in the game.

Kraemer got her second start of the season in the circle, and pitched the first three innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. She gave way to Georgia Youngblood (Ray, Mich./Lutheran North), who pitched the final two innings, scattering three hits.

Game Two
The Yellowjacket offense may have been potent in the opener, but UW-Oshkosh had an answer in the second game of the day, shutting down the Yellowjackets on just three hits, to defeat them for the second day in a row.

Kraemer had a single in the first, Cassie Bergman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) had a single in the fifth and Zoe Thomson (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) singled in the sixth for the Yellowjackets.

UW-Oshkosh scored two runs in the bottom of the first and a single run in the bottom of the second, but after that the Yellowjackets shut the Titans down, keeping it close with the hope the offense could get on track.

Emma Pillion (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township) got the start for the Yellowjackets and went four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. She walked one and struck out one. Kraemer came on and pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit. She walked one and struck out one.

Next up for the Yellowjackets are the warmer temperatures of Florida. They will open their schedule at the 33rd Annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Saturday, Mar. 11 with games against St. Joseph's Brooklyn (N.Y.) at 10 a.m. CST and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 12 p.m. CST.
