SUPERIOR, Wis. – The end of the regular season is near for the Yellowjacket women's tennis team.
Entering Monday, the Yellowjackets are on the schedule to play six matches, with five of them being in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The first match came Monday, as the Yellowjackets hosted Bethany Lutheran College in their final home match of the 2023 regular season.
And the Yellowjackets picked a great time to play one of their best matches of the 2023 season.
The Yellowjackets rolled through both singles and doubles play on the way to a 9-0 win over Bethany Lutheran Monday at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse. With the win, the Yellowjackets are now 7-11 overall and 4-2 in the UMAC, placing them third in the conference's North Division.
Doubles play didn't give the Yellowjackets a whole lot of trouble, as they made quick work of the Vikings to take a 3-0 lead.
The No. 2 doubles pairing of
Jessi Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) and
Shelby Hanson (Albert Lea, Minn./Albert Lea Senior) improved to 10-8 on the year with an 8-3 win over Kaitlyn Berreau and Hannah LeMay. Not long after that victory got the 'Jackets started
Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) and
Courtney Brandt (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids Senior) made it 2-0 with a win at No. 1 doubles. The Yellowjacket duo defeated Sailor Mohlenbrock and Emily Yehle 8-5. Mere moments later,
Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) and
Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) made it a clean sweep with an 8-5 win over Elissa Moonen and Addi Quern at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play Tejada got things moving quickly with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Mohlenbrock at No. 1 singles. The Yellowjackets clinched the victory for the day when
Marina Dostal (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior) defeated Berreau at No. 3 singles. The freshman from Cloquet took the first set 6-2, only to fall 4-6 in the second. Dostal rebounded to win the third set, 6-4, and clinch the match for the Yellowjackets.
With the win secured, the Yellowjackets went to work on the clean sweep.
Brandt made it a 6-0 with a three-set win over Yehle at No. 2 singles. Brandt won the first set 7-5 and dropped the second set 5-7. She won the third set 1-0, taking the game 10-5.
Wilfong didn't need much time to finish off Moonen at No. 4 singles, winning 6-2, 6-2. With the win, Wilfong improved to 8-11 on the year in singles action.
Haley Quick (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) earned the win at No. 5 singles, taking the first set 7-6 (7-4) before routing LeMay 6-1 in the second set. Kukowski finished the day off for the Yellowjackets with a smooth 6-1, 6-1 win over Quern at No. 6 singles.
The Yellowjackets will now travel to Duluth to take on St. Scholastica Tuesday, April 18. The opening serve is set for 2 p.m. at Longview Tennis Club.
