SAINT PAUL, Minn. – It's been a good run of late for the Yellowjacket women's tennis team.
Since a home loss to Northwestern April 13, the Yellowjackets have gone 4-0 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play, defeating their opponents over that stretch 32-4. With the wins, the Yellowjackets put themselves into position for a top seed in the upcoming UMAC tournament.
Sunday, the Yellowjackets closed out the regular season against Northwestern. While the Yellowjackets were playing for potential home-court advantage in the opening round of the UMAC tournament, Northwestern was playing to lock up the championship of the North Division on their home court.
With the trophy on the line, the Eagles showed up in a big way and defeated the Yellowjackets 8-1 to clinch the North Division crown at the Johnson Tennis Complex.
The loss snaps the four-match winning streak for the Yellowjackets (10-12, 7-3 UMAC), who will now have to wait out Monday's remaining matches to determine if they will advance to the UMAC tournament, or if they will have to travel to Minnesota Morris for a tiebreaking play-in match.
The teams played three solid matches in doubles play, but Northwestern took them all to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and Hailey Quick fell, 8-4 at No. 3 doubles to Taylar Smith and Anlalise Marquardt.
Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) and
Courtney Brandt (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids Senior) fell by the same score at No. 1 doubles to Annie Orvis and Abby Johnson. At No. 2 doubles,
Shelby Hanson (Albert Lea, Minn./Albert Lea Senior) and
Jessi Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) dropped an 8-5 decision to the Eagles' Domiano Baideme and Elise Jarchow.
Northwestern moved in front 4-0 when Smith defeated Quick 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, then clinched the win when Johnson defeated the Yellowjackets' Brandt at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
The Yellowjackets got their lone point of the day at No. 1 singles, where
Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) defeated Orvis in a thriller, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). With the win, Tejada improves to 12-9 on the year in singles play, with all of her victories coming at No. 1 singles.
It was a big week for Tejada, who went a perfect 5-0 in singles matches during the week, while going 4-1 with Brandt in doubles play.
The Yellowjackets will now play the waiting game to determine who and where they will play in the first round of the UMAC tournament. Stay tuned to
