Volk Shines for Yellowjackets at Rex Foster Twilight

4/8/2023 12:20:00 AM

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The last time we saw members of the Yellowjacket women's track and field team, it was over a month ago, when some team members were competing in an NCAA last chance event. Prior to that, the full team was bringing home the program's first-ever Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championship.

After a pair of cancellations, the 2022-23 season finally shifted outdoors, with the Yellowjackets opening the outdoor season at the Rex Fowler Twilight, hosted by UW-Whitewater.

And despite the long layoff, it was a good outdoor opener for a number of Yellowjackets.

The story of the day for the Yellowjacket women was Myla Volk (Wabeno, Wis./Wabeno). The freshman competed in three events, had three top 10 finishes, and in the process set three personal records. Volk played 10th in the high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 1.35 meters. In the long jump, Volk had a leap of 4.32 meters, which was good for seventh place. She placed sixth in the triple jump, finishing with a mark of 9.22 meters.

Making the results more impressive was the fact Volk was going back and forth between the high jump and triple jump, competing in the two events simultaneously.

Freshman Riley Wilson (Eagle River, Alaska/Eagle River) had an impressive debut in her first 3,000-meter steeplechase. Wilson set a personal record with a time of 14:21.06, which placed her third overall.

The crew competing in the 1500-meter run had a good day for the Yellowjackets. Halle Barker (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) placed second in her heat race before placing 13th in the final, coming in with a time of 5:12.76. The finish was a new personal record time for Barker. Cora Hudella (North Branch, Minn./North Branch Area) and Tea Boerner (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna Senior) also achieved new personal records in the 1500 meters, coming in with times of 5:32.76 and 5:39.12, respectively.

Rounding out the top ten finishes for the Yellowjackets was Kenzy Kreuzer (Stoddard, Wis./De Soto), who placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:26.75.

Other Yellowjackets posting personal records on the day were Emma Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Falls) (discus) and Hannah Baker (Aurora, Minn./Mesabi East) (discus, hammer, shot put).

Next up for the Yellowjackets is the Saint Mary's Invitational in Winona, Minn. Saturday, April 15.
