5/15/2023 9:49:00 AM

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Wisconsin-Superior softball team, by way of its victory in last weekend's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) tournament, earned the program's fifth trip to the NCAA tournament. The tournament field was announced by the NCAA Monday, and the Yellowjackets are headed to the regional in Oshkosh, Wis., where they will meet Concordia University Wisconsin in opening round of the double-elimination tournament.

The Yellowjackets and Falcons will play Thursday, May 18. The start time of the game at the Oshkosh Softball Complex is still to be announced.

The Yellowjackets (31-11) entered the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed and defeated Northwestern 4-2 in their opening game May 11. After having played washed out by rain Friday, the teams moved north to the College of St. Benedict to finish the tournament. The first game at the CSB Softball Complex saw the Yellowjackets fall to Bethany Lutheran, 8-7 in 10 innings. They then defeated Northwestern 7-1 to set up a rematch with Bethany Lutheran for the championship.

Entering play Sunday knowing they had to win twice, the Yellowjackets played their best softball of the weekend. Behind the pitching of Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights), the Yellowjackets defeated the Vikings 3-0 to set up the deciding game. The second game was a pitcher's duel that ended in a 1-0 Yellowjacket win when Izzy Lingle (Enumclaw, Wash./Enumclaw) singled in the winning run.

This year marks the second time in head coach Melissa Fracker's three seasons the Yellowjackets have advanced to the NCAA tournament, having also qualified in 2021 where they played in the Wartburg regional.

UW-Oshkosh and Luther College round out the rest of regional bracket.
