SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Yellowjacket women's soccer team started their regular season slate today, but it came a bit earlier than expected. Due to the anticipated scorching temperatures in Southern Minnesota, both UW-Superior and Gustavus Adolphus agreed to move their first-ever match to a 9 a.m. kickoff.
Junior
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) scored the first goal of the season for the 'Jackets in the 75th minute to knot the match at 1-1, but that would be all as the Gusties scored three minutes later to secure the 2-1 victory over the Yellowjackets at Gusties Soccer Field Friday.
UW-Superior would find itself in a position to attack within minutes of the first whistle, but the Gusties backline stayed strong and thwarted any attempts of a Yellowjacket goal early on.
In the 19th minute, the Gusties would find the back of the net courtesy of Gabriela Rodriguez, who utilized the bottom-right portion of goal from a well-played cross by Jordan Oelkers.
For the second-straight season, Holmquist was the first Yellowjacket to score in the season opener. After a costly handball from the Gusties, the 'Jackets would only need 30 seconds to find the back of the net. A free kick from
Brynne Crystal (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) would set Holmquist up for a header that snuck past goalkeeper Claire Hemstock to even the match at one goal apiece.
Less than three minutes later, Gusties midfielder Annika Lewis capitalized off a corner kick from teammate Peyton Mahady for their second goal of the match.
The Gusties outshot the Yellowjackets 20-2 on the day, with 15 shots landing on target. Sophomore goalkeeper
Quinn Clark (Duluth Minn./Duluth East) took her first loss of the season despite notching 13 saves.
The Yellowjackets will play another non-conference match against the Blue Devils from UW-Stout Sept. 3. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Nelson Field
