MORRIS, Minn. - After opening Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play with a 7-0 victory over North Central, the Yellowjacket women's soccer team followed up last week's performance with a victory over Minnesota Morris 5-2 Saturday.
Spearheading the Yellowjackets attack was junior
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) and senior
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), as they were responsible for all five goals scored on the evening. Wilson added two, while Holmquist collected the hat trick.
From the opening whistle the Yellowjackets took control of the ball and didn't let up. It only took two-and-a-half minutes for the scoring to begin as Holmquist found the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead, with sophomore
Kamryn Hill (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) tallying the assist.
From there the 'Jackets would pile on the shots, and just five minutes later Wilson would notch her third goal of the season and first of the match. Notching the assist was junior midfielder
Emma Fornengo (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior).
Wilson would find the net once again in the 29th minute, taking a feed from freshman
Julia Lindow (Richfield, Minn./Richfield) and sneaking a shot past Cougars goalie Danielle Reinhard, extending the 'Jackets lead to 3-0.
At the start of the second half, the Cougars came out with a vengeance and Kim Peters scored a goal just 17 seconds in. Roughly a minute later, the Cougars found the back of the net once again, this time coming from Jadyn Sondrol.
At the 51st minute Holmquist scored her second of the match from
Lindrey Schendel (Firestone, Colo./Skyline), putting the Yellowjackets ahead 4-2. In the 61st minute Holmquist extended the 'Jackets lead to 5-2, as she notched her third goal of the match, this time with an assist from Fornengo.
From there each team would trade shots but none would break either goalkeeper, as the Yellowjackets earned the 5-2 victory over the Cougars.
Holmquist concluded the match with six total points and Wilson with four points.
The Yellowjackets (2-2-1, 2-0-0) return to Superior for a match up against Northwestern. Kickoff at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex is slated for Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
