SUPERIOR, Wis. – Despite a slow start to the 2023 season, the Yellowjacket women's soccer team have opened Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play on a strong note, winning three matches while scoring 15 goals and allowing just three to opponents.
Inclement weather hit Superior Saturday, which was the original-scheduled match day for UW-Superior and UMAC foe Bethany Lutheran. Despite a bit of morning rain, both teams took the pitch at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex Sunday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets found the back of the net twice courtesy of sophomore
Kamryn Hill (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) and senior
Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake) to defeat Bethany Lutheran, improving its win-streak to four matches and moving to 4-0 in conference play.
The 'Jackets were inches away from scoring within the first few minutes of the match, as
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) fired a shot that just caught the goal post. Nevertheless, Wilson would notch an assist after giving a feed to Hill, who would earn her second goal in as many matches at the 18th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Quinn Clark (Duluth Minn./Duluth East) had a quiet first half, only registering two saves on three shots.
Play would pick up just three minutes into the second half, as Olaitz Muguruza found the back of the net to even the match at 1-1. Elena Rubio would tally an assist.
Teams would go back-and-forth trading possessions for some time, until Alessi received a feed from
Lindrey Schendel (Firestone, Colo./Skyline) and beat Vikings goalkeeper Brooke Wolanin, boosting the 'Jackets to a 2-1 lead and increasing their winning streak to four matches.
Clark picked up the victory after saving two Vikings shots. Wolanin took the loss, saving one.
UWS totaled nine shots on the evening, with Wilson, Alessi, and
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) each acquiring two. Schendel, Alessi, and Brenna Matson played a full 90 minutes.
The Yellowjackets are back in action Wednesday as they travel to face Northland College. Kickoff at Ponzio Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
