SUPERIOR, Wis. – When the Yellowjackets ousted Bethany Lutheran College in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) championship match of 2021,
Josh Bellamy (High Wycombe, England/FAB Football Academy) needed only nine seconds of overtime to give the Yellowjackets the win and a trip to the NCAA tournament.
Â
It's pretty hard to score a goal in soccer in faster fashion than nine seconds, but Bellamy and the Yellowjackets found a way to do it Saturday.
The Yellowjackets took the opening kickoff, went straight down the pitch and Bellamy put the ball home just eight seconds in, setting the tone in what would end up being a 7-0 Yellowjacket win over Martin Luther at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
Â
With the win the Yellowjackets (6-2-2, 5-1 UMAC) have now won two straight.
Â
Felipe Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Soma) got the early scoring play started, moving down the field before sending a pass to Bellamy who, unguarded tapped the ball in for his second goal of the season at the eight-second mark, scoring the eventual game-winning goal.
Â
The top scorer for the Yellowjackets got in on the act in the 20th minute.
Joel Thomas (Cardiff, Wales/Islwyn) got the assist as
Jake Kidd (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season to make it 2-0. The lead extended a few minutes later when Martin Luther scored an own goal, putting the Yellowjackets in front 3-0 heading into halftime.
Â
Early in the second half Oliveira added to his point total in the game, taking a brilliant feed from
Mackie Ringrose (Ewhurst, England/St. Peter's Catholic School) and guiding the ball into the lower half of the goal for his second of the year to push the lead to 4-0 in the 48th minute.
Â
The Yellowjackets made everyone in attendance happy in the 60th minute when they converted a set piece to move in front 5-0. Bellamy started the play from the right side of the field and sent the ball to the right hash mark where Oliveira put it over the Martin Luther goalkeeper from 20 yards, scoring his second of the game to make it 5-0.
Â
The fifth goal triggered the Five Goal Free for All, where everyone in attendance received a coupon for a free scoop of custard from Culver's in Superior.
Â
In the 79th minute the Yellowjackets got the prettiest goal of the day, when
Alfie Hudd (Exeter, England/Exeter College) blasted a shot with his right foot into the upper left corner to make it a 6-0 game. Hudd's shot from distance went over the outstretched arms of the Martin Luther goalkeeper for his first goal of the season.
Â
The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring in the 84th minute when a shot from
Raggi Carvalho (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/EFG Sebrae) went off the back of
Phillip Eriksen (Skjetten, Norway/Lorenskog) and into the goal to make the final score 7-0. For Eriksen it was his first goal of the year and snaps a snakebitten start to the campaign.
Â
For the match the Yellowjackets outshot the Knights 25-1 and had a 16-0 edge in shots on goal.
Patrick Sessions (Brighton, England/Brighton, Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College) made the start in goal and played the first 75 minutes before yielding to
Carter Lansdale (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy), who finished the match. Neither keeper was forced to make a save in the game.
Â
The Yellowjackets will stay at home and will stay in UMAC play when they host Crown College. The opening kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
