SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's soccer team is rolling.
Picking right up where they left off in 2022, the Yellowjacket women opened the 2023 season winning five of their first eight games, including going 5-0-0 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play early in the campaign.
And Saturday, the 'Jackets wasted little time making sure their record, and win streak, continued moving in the right direction.
The Yellowjackets scored twice in a span of about 20 seconds early in the match before cruising to a 4-0 win over Martin Luther College Saturday at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
It looked the Yellowjackets (6-2-1, 6-0-0 UMAC) were going to follow the men's soccer team's lead and put five goals on the board to trigger the Culver's Five Goal Free for All, but the fifth goal of the match was disallowed in the final minute, much to the chagrin of the crowd.
Early goals were not disallowed, however, and the Yellowjackets found the back of the net early and often to put the match out of reach.
In the 15th minute the Yellowjackets opened the scoring when
Tori Vosburg (Cloquet, Minn./Esko) scored her first goal of the season, going up to put it home with a header to make it 1-0. Seconds later the Yellowjackets tallied again, as
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) found
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) in the box and the all-time goal scoring leader in UW-Superior history made no mistake, burying a shot in the left side of the goal for her team-best eighth goal of the season.
Wilson wasn't done, however.
In the 21st minute Wilson got the ball in tight, and from the center of the box sent a laser past the Martin Luther goalkeeper for her second goal of the match, and a 3-0 Yellowjacket lead.
The Yellowjackets maintained the lead until the 63rd minute when
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) was awarded a penalty kick, and she made no mistake, blasting a kick past the Knight's goalkeeper for her seventh goal of the season to make it 4-0.
Quinn Clark (Duluth Minn./Duluth East) got the start for the Yellowjackets and lived at the lonely end of the field Saturday, getting the clean sheet without having to make a save. Her record on the year improves to 3-1-1 on the year and shutout was her second of the campaign.
The Yellowjackets outshot the Knights 27-0 and had a 12-0 edge in shots on goal.
Next up for the Yellowjackets is a visit from Crown College. The match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
