Yellowjackets Scoot Past Marian

FOND du LAC, Wis. – The Yellowjacket men's basketball team hit the road to play their final non-conference opponent, the Sabres of Marian University. Both teams were originally scheduled to face each other nearly two weeks ago but was postponed due to winter weather. Warmer temperatures hit Wisconsin
 
The Sabres and 'Jackets traded blows early on, exchanging points and the lead. Halfway through the first, UWS found themselves with a five-point lead at 20-15, but Marian found ways to score and ended the first half trailing by just two points at 34-32. With Josef Fahrenholtz (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield) finishing with 26 points and Andrew Kunelius (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia) adding 10 of his own, the Yellowjackets were able to secure a 67-58 victory inside Sadoff Gymnasium.
 
Game Notes
  • Fahrenholtz's offense helped propel the 'Jackets over the Sabres, as he was seven-for-eight from mid-range while also nailing all 12 free throws awarded.
  • Kunelius nailed five-of-seven from field goal range while grabbing two boards and two assists.
  • The Yellowjackets saw points from ten different players, including T.J. Moberg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) who had a team-best seven rebounds during the contest. From the line, he was a perfect 4-4, as well.
  • UW-Superior boasted an 86.2 free throw percentage on the evening (25-29), their highest mark of the season to date.
  • J'Vaun Walker (Rosharon, Texas/Manvel) finished with nine points, giving him 1,000 career points as a Yellowjacket. His 1,000th point came on a free throw.
  • Marian's bench scored 18 points throughout the game, compared to the 'Jackets' 13.
  • UWS scored nearly half of their points inside the paint, scoring 18 in the first half and 14 in the second half of play.
  • The Sabres had three players who carded double figures, including JeanLuc Wilson, Gavin Jahns, and Mahlik Hall.
  • The Yellowjackets moved to 3-1 all-time against the Sabres, with Monday's game being the first road victory in game history.
 
The Yellowjackets will now prepare to face off against Northland in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action. The opening tipoff is scheduled for Saturday at 4:45 p.m., inside Kendrigan Gymnasium.
