SUPERIOR, Wis. -- The UW-Superior women's soccer team celebrated an historic day on Saturday, taking the field for the grand opening of Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium on the UW-Superior campus. In their first match at their new home, the Yellowjackets faced off against Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opponent Minnesota Morris. Adding to the momentous occasion, the Yellowjackets secured an 8-0 victory over the Cougars.
With the Yellowjackets' win this afternoon, they now stand at 8-6-0 overall and 6-1-0 in UMAC play, maintaining a tie for first place in the conference with Bethany Lutheran. However, Bethany Lutheran currently owns the tiebreaker as of today.
Kamryn Hill (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) was the first to net a goal on the SCCU turf, striking just 11 seconds into the match to give the 'Jackets a 1-0 lead.
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior) played the ball back to Hill, who lofted the ball over the goalkeeper's head to the left side of the net.
Wilson delivered a standout performance, igniting the Yellowjackets' offense with a hat trick and an assist. Her scoring spree began in the 16th minute, breaking free on a solo run and would thread the ball between the goalkeeper's legs. Just over a minute later, she struck again, netting her.
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) and
Erika Schneider (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) were credited with the assists. Wilson completed her hat trick in the 33rd minute, with an assist from
Erika Schneider (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West), giving the Yellowjackets a commanding 4-0 lead.
Yellowjacket goalkeeper,
Elysabeth Lough (Las Vegas, Nev./Northwest Career and Technical Academy) got the start and is now 4-3-0 in net. Lough was only forced to make one save.
Baylee Nygard (Saint Peter, Minn./Saint Peter) came into the match with 20 minutes remaining in the second half and was not forced to make any saves.
Match Notes
- The 'Jackets extended their win streak against the Cougars to 13, dating back to Oct. of 2017.
- Beth Schneider (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West), less than a minute after Wilson's third goal, would find the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season. Julia Lindow (Richfield, Minn./Richfield) from the corner kick found Niamh Larson (Brookfield, Ill./Riverside Brookfield) in front of the net who had a short pass to Schneider who put the ball to the upper right side of the net, giving the Yellowjackets a 5-0 lead.
- In the 47th minute of the match, the Cougars would net an own goal, advancing the Yellowjackets to a 6-0 lead.
- Homlquist netted the seventh goal for the Yellowjackets, unassisted, putting a high ball over the Morris goalkeeper.
- Taylor DeCook (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) put the finishing touch on the Yellowjackets' commanding 8-0 win. After Hill unleashed a powerful shot on goal, DeCook was quick to capitalize on the rebound, lifting the ball over the Morris goalkeeper just under the crossbar.
The Yellowjackets will be back home on Wednesday, Oct. 16 when they host Northwestern for more UMAC play. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium.
