Women’s Tennis Splits With UW-Stevens Point and UW-La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's tennis continued with its strong fall schedule as the women traveled down to the Green Island Tennnis Courts.

The Yellowjackets had a day of mixed results on Saturday, starting with a thrilling 4-3 victory over UW-Stevens Point. However, in their second matchup against the host team, UW-La Crosse, the 'Jackets faced a tough challenge and fell 7-0.

The Yellowjackets are now 2-1 on the campaign.

The Yellowjackets would lose the lone doubles point as they would fall to the Pointers in two of the three matches. That did not stop the 'Jackets from putting up a solid performance at singles earning wins at the No. 2,3, 5 and 6 spots.

Match Notes
  • The duo of Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) delivered a strong performance at No. 3 doubles, earning a decisive 6-1 victory.
  • At No. 2 singles, Anouk Bluemm (Nuernberg, Germany/Wilhelm-Loege Gymnasium) would earn the win in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-3.
  • In a closely contested battle against Jordan Scharf at No. 3 singles, Elif Oezen (Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany/Einstein Gymnasium) emerged victorious, winning straight sets, both 7-5.
  • Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) dominated her match, sweeping both sets with impressive scores of 6-0 and 6-4.
  • Giulia Araujo De Barros (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Sabre) secured a solid win at No. 6 singles, finishing her match with set scores of 6-1 and 6-2.
The Yellowjackets faced host school, UW-La Crosse for the second match of the day. UW-La Crosse has been off to a hot start and have an overall record of 9-1 after today.

Match Notes
  • UW-La Crosse showcased its strength by sweeping all doubles matches, securing victories with impressive scores of 6-1, 6-1, and 6-0 against the Yellowjackets.
  • Arauju De Barros, at No. 1 singles, battled with her opponent but ultimately fell short, with set scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
  • Oezen dropped both sets at No. 2 singles 6-1 while teammate Curtis fell at No. 4 singles with set scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
  • In a hard-fought match, Jonas faced off against Lizzy Brinkman at No. 5 singles.  After losing the first set decisively with a score of 6-0, Jonas rallied in the second set, pushing the game to a tiebreaker where Jonas fell 7-6.
  • Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech), at No. 6 singles, fell to Zoe Klicker in two sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-1.
The Yellowjackets are back in action tomorrow Sunday, Oct. 13 as they travel to the Sand Valley Grass Courts where they will face Ripon for a 10:30 a.m. start.
