SUPERIOR, Wis. – In a closely-contested Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon, the UW-Superior Yellowjackets hosted the UW-Stevens Point Pointers at Siinto S. Wessman Arena. Despite a strong performance, the Yellowjackets fell short, losing 2-1 to the Pointers.
This defeat brings the Yellowjacket's overall record to 4-4-1 and 1-2-0 in WIAC action.
Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) delivered the lone goal for the Yellowjackets. From the blueline,
Lucy Drougas (Superior, Wis./Superior) initiated the play by sending a pass down to
Kaylin Garner (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak), positioned on the right perimeter. Garner advanced with the puck and released a shot aimed at the weakside pad of the UWSP goaltender. The rebound landed perfectly on the backdoor, where Hoops capitalized to close the gap to 2-1.
Anna Maulson (Lac du Flambeau, Wis./Lakeland Union) started between the pipes this afternoon for the Yellowjackets. She was credited with 18 saves, and her record this season is now 2-3-0.
Game notes
- UW-Stevens Point opened the scoring in the 13th minute of the first period when Molly Pohlkamp fired a shot from the blue line. The puck took an awkward bounce, slipping past Maulson's glove and into the back of the net.
- The Pointers wasted no time extending their lead early in the second period, scoring less than a minute in. Maddie Andrle sent a backhand pass from the corner to Courtney Leising, who was left unmarked in front of the net. Leising lifted the puck over Maulson's right shoulder to make it 2-0.
- UWSP's goaltender was tested, making four saves in the first period, 12 in the second, and 16 in the third for a total of 32 saves.
- The Yellowjackets dominated the third period, playing strong defense and limiting UWSP to just one shot on goal, which Maulson easily stopped.
- Ashton Parnell (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) led the Yellowjackets' offense with six shots on goal, while Garner followed closely with five.
The Yellowjackets return to the ice on Tuesday, Nov. 26, as they make the short trip across the bridge to face St. Scholastica in a non-conference matchup. Puck drop at MARS Lakeview Arena is scheduled for 6 p.m.
