Yellowjackets Beat Cobbers 2-1 to Get Back in Win Column

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The 2024-25 hockey season is only six weeks old, but Friday the Yellowjacket women's hockey team hit the season's midpoint in terms of games played fueled by a 10-game month of November.

Friday was game No. 13 on the year, and the Yellowjackets were taking on Concordia. The Cobbers are on the opposite end of the spectrum, entering Friday having played just six games, none of which were of the non-conference variety.

Concordia came into the game with an overall mark of 1-5-0, while the Yellowjackets were looking to snap a four-game winless streak dating back to Nov. 22. Something had to give, and fortunately for the Yellowjackets, things went their way in this one.

The Yellowjackets scored once in each of the first and second periods and got stellar goaltending from Molly Black (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake) on the way to a 2-1 win over the Cobbers at Wessman Arena.

Black turned aside 28 Cobber shots, helping the Yellowjackets (5-6-2, 1-3-0 WIAC) get back in the win column and inch closer to the .500 mark on the year.

Stacy Steiner (Janesville, Wis./Craig) scored her first collegiate goal in the first period, while Kaylin Garner (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) tallied her team-leading seventh late in the second to provide the offense for the Yellowjackets Friday.

Game Notes
  • Garner had a chance to open the scoring in the first period, but she was denied on a shorthanded breakaway.
  • Steiner struck at 12:34 of the first, getting the puck at the left point and blasting a slap shot past Cobber goaltender Ashlea Arvidson to make it 1-0. Gaby Andreacchi (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Patrick) got the lone assist on the goal.
  • It stayed that way until the last minute of the second period, when Darbie Mattson (Atikokan, Ontario/Atikokan) cleared the defensive zone on the left boards and Garner picked up the puck, skated into the Concordia zone and wired a shot from the right circle over the glove hand of Arvidson to increase the lead to 2-0.
  • Garner's goal came with 38.7 seconds to play in the second period.
  • Concordia spoiled the shutout bid at 14:45 of the third. With two Yellowjackets in the penalty box, Abbey Reule got a rebound at the top of the goal crease and slid it home to cut the lead in half.
  • The Yellowjackets killed off the rest of the power play, then got a power play of their own late in the period, helping salt the game away.
  • Concordia outshot the Yellowjackets 29-21.
  • Garner paced the Yellowjackets with four shots on goal, while Maddie Rewertz (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Ashton Parnell (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) had three apiece. Rewertz also rang one of the post in the third period.
  • The Yellowjackets now lead the all-time series against the Cobbers 10-8.
The Yellowjackets and Cobbers will play the second game of their weekend series Saturday afternoon at Wessman Arena. The opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
